If you’re missing just one, or several teeth, a partial denture in an ideal option to restore your smile and make it easy to bite and chew food.
If you currently have a gap in your smile, you may need partial denture for aesthetic reasons, for eating, talking, or to protect your remaining teeth from drifting or over-erupting causing existing teeth to lapse, spaces to close and ultimately causing teeth to become loose.
Partial dentures are not fixed-they can be easily inserted and removed whenever you wish. The surrounding natural teeth help hold the partial denture in place so that it doesn’t move or fall out when chewing or talking. We work with you to design the best option partial denture to suit every individual
Acrylic dentures are usually the most cost effective and can made within a short period of time. They can also be relined, teeth added if you lose any more natural teeth and can also be used as a temporary denture before dental implants, or as an immediate denture which is made before extraction of a tooth so the patient has no embarrassing gaps, this can be fitted by the dentist post extraction on the same visit.
Some disadvantages are that the acrylic denture base is slightly weaker due to its irregular shape and can break, especially those made for the lower arch. To counteract this, the acrylic can feel thick and can take a little time to get use to.
Chrome dentures are a more durable and functional material for a partial denture, as the frame and required components are all cast in one piece. The components of a chrome partial denture rest on soft tissue and natural teeth, making the denture both tooth and tissue borne, thus distributing the load evenly when chewing, which helps to protect the underlying bone.
Due to the strength of the chrome frame it can be made slimmer and smaller, more effective design, making it more comfortable to wear and function with, whilst giving you the security of less chance of breakage. Patients like chrome as there is not a requirement of full palate coverage allowing patient to still feel hot and cold and taste food as there are taste buds in the palate also.
Flexible dentures(Valplast dentures) Are exactly that flexible, so they do not break and are tight fitting. Valplast is the material the dentures are fabricated from, having great mechanical properties allowing for the denture to be heated up in hot water to increase its retention or to reduce tightness directly by the patient themseleves.
These dentures can be very minimal and are nearly invisible in the mouth. Patients love flexible dentures especially for patients missing one or two teeth to cover a space.
